FAQ

Responsibly Organic Cat Litter Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does it clump?

ANSWER 1: Responsibly Organic is a “non-clumping” litter. Traditional clay based litters advertise themselves as “clumping” litter, meaning cat urine clumps into small golf/tennis ball shaped clumps of hardened clay when urine makes contact with the litter. They advertise this as being a benefit of the clay based litter because they are easy to spot and scoop out of the litter box. This is considered especially important since it is the ammonia from the urine that creates most of that pungent foul odor coming from a cat’s litter box.

Responsibly Organic hemp based liter does not clump. However that is not because it is an inferior technology compared to traditional clay based litter. In fact it is the opposite. Responsibly Organic litter doesn’t immediately clump on contact with urine because of the vastly superior absorbency rate of the hemp. Hemp is 5x more absorbent 🧽 than clay (recall the story of dropping a 1lb brick of clay and equivalent size 1lb brick of hemp in a bucket of water, you’ll pull out 1lb of water with that clay but 5 lbs of water with the hemp!). So clumping is not immediately observable because the hemp is absorbing all the urine. Additionally, hemp is a superior technology because it is anti-microbial (bacterial) and hence kills the ammonia smell before it even becomes a problem. So not only will the customer not see the clumping taking up space in the litter box, but the pungent odor is not present like it is in clay litter boxes.

Lastly, the hemp based litter lasts longer precisely because it is not clumping. Every time a cat urinates in a clay based box, the pet owner has to scoop out the ball of clumped litter to avoid the ammonia smell, and replace that lost clump with new litter in the box. Since our hemp litter is not clumping and hence avoiding the need for replacement, the litter lasts longer!

2. How does it smell?

ANSWER 2: Responsibly Organic cat litter is “fragrance-free.” Other cat litter brands frequently use fragrances (such as lavender etc) in order to mask the pungent odor of ammonia that is produced from cat urine. However, since RespOrg hemp based litter is naturally antibacterial, the ammonia smell is avoided altogether. So there is no need for artificial fragrance additives to be mixed into our litter formula.

3. What about tracking?

ANSWER 3: Responsibly Organic runs it’s industrial hemp through a proprietarily calibrated decortication process that results in a hemp based litter that is low in or devoid of any tracking. “Tracking” refers to the litter a cat will drag out of the box and onto the surrounding flooring.

4. How about long hair cats

ANSWER 4: Responsibly Organic offers a pelletized version of its cat litter for use with long-hair cats that are more prone to tracking problems and litter being caught in the cats hair

5. How about cats fresh out of surgery?

ANSWER 5: Responsibly Organic offers a pelletized version of its cat litter for use with cats that have had recent surgery (and hence unable to groom themselves adequately) and are more susceptible to infection issues due to litter being caught in the cats hair and grooming areas

6. Why hemp? What’s special/ different?

ANSWER 6: Responsibly Organic is an industrial hemp company first and foremost. Although industrial hemp has been utilized by man for thousands of years, it commercial use was abolished in the united states at the dawn of cannabis prohibition more than 80 years ago. Fortunately, that abolition was undone by the 2018 United States Farm Bills. It is now federally legal to cultivate, manufacture, distribute and sell industrial hemp based products throughout the United States and abroad. But after 80 years of prohibition we are only now figuring out how to best commercialize the crop. Accordingly, RespOrg has developed a product line based on Industrial Hemp's superior qualities. Perhaps two of the best known qualities of Industrial Hemp is its "absorbency" and "anti-microbial." Hemp is a vastly superior absorbent when compared to other materials. In fact, hemp is 5x more absorbent than clay. Cat owners report that two of the most important factors in their selection litter is: absorbency and odor protection.  Hence, one of RespOrg's first products is a cat litter utilizing the disruptive technology of hemp as an ingredient rather than the traditional clay that has been used for the last 70 years. Additionally, hemp litter is lighter than clay based litter as well as carbon negative environment friendly.

7. Why is the size of bag so small? How long will this last me?

ANSWER 7: Responsibly Organic cat litter comes in a bag that looks smaller and feels a lot lighter than traditional clay based litters. That's because hemp weighs less than clay! Our 30-day supply bag is smaller than clay based litters because hemp simply lasts longer than clay. Recall that hemp based litter lasts longer because it is not clumping. Every time a cat urinates in a clay based box, the pet owner has to scoop out the ball of clumped litter to avoid the pungent ammonia smell, and replace that lost clump with new litter in the box. Since our hemp litter is not clumping and hence avoiding the need for replacement, the litter lasts longer! So, our litter weighs less AND takes up less space in your closet or garage. This means that a 2 lb bag of our RespOrg litter will last the average cat an entire month at a price that is no more than what a 10 lb bag from a traditional clay litter would last.

8. Is it all-natural?

ANSWER 8: Yes, Responsibly Organic's  proprietary cat litter formula is made of all natural ingredients and is 100% biodegradable. Our litter's primary ingredient is 100% natural and renewable hemp sustainably grown in the U.S. RespOrg is an environment friendly company that aims to keep its products all natural. This means our litter doesn't include artificial additives, chemicals, clay, silica dust, fragrances or other synthetics.

9. Do cats reject it?

ANSWER 9: Cat's are notoriously finicky when it comes to their litter and hence are known to "reject" new litters. However, we have found that to be less the case when it comes to RespOrg. We attribute this to the fact that our hemp litter is all natural and hence easily adoptable by cats. Contrast that to clay based litter with all of its additives. Simply put, our hemp based litter more closely emulates the conditions a cat would find in nature than a clay based hemp! We advise our customers to transition their pets over to our litter by at first utilizing a 50/50 mix of their old litter alternative with our hemp based litter. The cats should adopt to a 100% RespOrg litter mix soon thereafter.

10. What is your company’s policy with respect to small pet store owners vs. Big box?

ANSWER 10: Responsibly Organic is an approved vendor with the most popular Big Box stores such as WalMart.com and Amazon. However, we consider that status as more of a validation of our products than anything else. The focus of our sales channel development is on the independent pet stores and our tiered pricing structure favoring independent pet stores over the big box retailers reflects that.

11. Can you service bulk (feed stores etc)?
